I'm taking part in Race for LandAid 2026!
On Thursday 11 June, I'm taking part in Race for LandAid to raise money to help support young people who have nowhere safe to call home.
When I was 15, I moved to London from Scotland. Shortly after arriving I was placed in a hostel in Hackney sharing facilities with men and women who had just left prison as this was all they had at the time. No 15-year-old should ever have been placed in that environment. I was told by Islington Council that if I refused the placement, I would be making myself homeless.
Thankfully, my college stepped in and threatened legal action. Within days, I was moved to an age-appropriate hostel where I stayed until I was 19 and finally got the keys to my own home. It hasn’t been an easy journey, but we made it.
Sometimes I think about what could have happened if I had turned down that first hostel, and it’s a frightening thought. No young person should ever have to choose between homelessness and feeling unsafe.
That’s why this cause matters so much to me. Every young person deserves the chance to feel safe, to grow, to thrive, and to succeed.
