The Black Mountains Route

You will be walking for 27km along the length of the Brecon Beacons, recently renamed as Bannau Brycheiniog. Starting at The Old Pandy Inn you will trek up and over the Welsh-English border firstly to Hatterrall Hill at 531mWe then proceed on to Black Mountain South Top at 637m and finally on to our highest point of the day Twyn Llech at 704mWhat makes this challenge a truly remarkable feat is that for 19km of this you will be high up on the same ultra long ridge line throughout the day. This is a real commitment as you will need to push on through to make it to the other side to arrive at the quirky market town of Hay-on-Wye.
This particular route has been chosen due to the trail forming the far Eastern boundary line of the the Black Mountains that sit within the wider National Park. The trail chosen for your special challenge event sets out on a far reaching rolling ridge line following grassy and stone laid tracks to eventually drop down and reach your final destination before heading back by coach to your 5* hotel at The Celtic Manor Resort with a buffet to feed those hungry bellies!

You must prepare thoroughly for this challenge but don’t worry, we are here to help you every step of the way with a kit list, nutrition guidance, training plan and team of marshals to check your progress along the route. Should anyone seriously struggle, we will have additional mountain leaders in place to guide you down the nearest available escape route off the ridge line to a support vehicle in the valley below, but we know you've all got this in you ...as long as you prepare adequately!

Please ensure you are in good physical fitness before you take this challenge on!

Training

Our 10 week training plan works on increasing stamina in the gym or at home with a particular focus on endurance and strength training.

The plan includes walks from 45 mins up to 3.5 hours at the weekends. We support this process by providing you with training routes and advice on how best to get the ascent & distance in whilst building your training time gradually. Get ready for building your leg strength through lunges, calf raises and of course getting out with a weighted rucksack. You’ll need to ensure that you have a fair few long walks under your belt including undulating terrain.

The final point to note is that this is a self guided walk but it is a team challenge - it is very much NOT a race! We will be aiming to walk in a long convoy for as much as possible throughout the day. Your whole team will be relying on you to walk at a steady pace and support each other as you go.

We like to keep big groups walking together as much as possible for morale and to help make our marshalling process somewhat easier. If you do decide to go off on your own, you won't be able access the support of our rolling team of experienced and Outdoor First Aid qualified marshals and Mountain Leaders.

If there are team members who are slow to the point that the marshals project you are unlikely to finish within a reasonable time, we will support participants back down the hill early to ensure you are kept safe and that those who are physically able get the best support of our rolling team of marshals. If our marshals all end up right at the back of the group to support just one or two people, it isn't fair on the wider group as a whole!

Please put some training effort in and it will really pay off for everyone!

We've put together some training & guidance for you to ensure you are fit a ready to take on the Trek!
